Since prehistoric times, people have huddled together around
campfires and told stories to each other. These stories have served the purpose
of entertaining (taking our minds off of the brutal realities of survival on
this planet), educational (teaching us how to better navigate and survive some
of the brutal realities of survival on this planet), and remind us of the goal,
which is namely to stay bound together as a tribe, family, nation or similar
social units to hopefully aim for the ideal of collectively overcoming the day
to day drudgeries of simple survival and achieve the status of heroes and gods.
(Well, one can dream!)
The stories that have survived the test of time and become
the most repeated, were the ones that resonated with our collective natures,
taught us the most enduring and valuable lessons or lifted our spirits through
the vehicle of mirth or hope.
Somewhere along the way, there arose a class of people who
saw that as technology evolved and story telling and dissemination more and
more became reliant on these changes that the profitable position was to set
oneself up as a gatekeeper to the means of production and distribution. We
eventually came to know these gatekeepers by names such as; scribes, priests,
printers, publishers, newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television
stations, record companies, movie studios, et al. As you can plainly see, this
model was profitable and even beneficial to the public and to artists for a
period of time, but that time has come to an end. Everywhere you look,
traditional publishing is upside down, the music industry is upside down, the
movie industry is upside down, and mostly due to their own myopic tendencies.
Joseph Matheny in conversation with Antero Alli about all sorts of tasty subjects. Also, JM discusses the changes occurring at Alterati, et al.

No homegrown music this week, just some blatantly ripped off Cheech and Chong.

Alli currently resides in Berkeley, California, where he conducts workshops and stages theatrical productions, some of which have been released as films. Alli is also a professional astrologer and has authored books on experimental theatre, astrology and Timothy Leary’s 8-circuit model of consciousness.

Big changes coming here to this network. A complete rewrite and redesign of Alterati, Piltolite, Greylodge, and PODLAFF is coming this winter. We will probably be off-line for a month or so as we roll it all up and begin to roll out the new stuff. Alterati, PodLaff and Piltolite will be merging into something new, currently code-namedHukilau.However, right now, we can say no more. We will continue to put out GSpots every 2 weeks, and will leave up an archive page of the last 4 0r 4 episodes, while we hammer and saw behind the curtain. We are aiming for a 2010 relaunch of the new project and we think you’re going to LOVE it. Until then, be well and we’ll see you in the new year.
I’ve heard great things from the folks at Foolishpeople about the Abattoir Pages and the staging and presentation of the scene/installation I wrote for it. If you’re at all capable, get on down to:The Abattoir Pages
This Hallowe’en, the infamous horror author Helen Mayer will hold court at a debauched secret party. She will share the perverse and warped research conducted inside the old abandoned abattoir, which was the genesis of her greatest work. In this dark playground, the very nature of human terror has been tested, abused and fed into the living story ‘The Forest’.The author invites you to solve the puzzle and unlock the terrifying history within the old and powerful pages hidden throughout the slaughterhouse. Each holds a key to learning the truth of an ancient tale, which will ensure your survival.
Tonight, a debt will be repaid to blood dishonoured. An eternal nightmare rises up from the depths of the dark boreal forest, in the shadow of the mountain. It comes to feed on new meat inside an old abattoir.

Joseph Matheny interviews Danielle Hatfield (yes, one of THOSE Hatfields!) about Twitter, the Internet and life in general. A good casual conversation, not too stuffy or formal at all, just the way we like it, with a side of Louisiana hot sauce! Also another episode of In Your Ear-New Yorker Magazine archived short stories read aloud and discussed
by current contributors.
Wow. Wrote to t. Winter Damon to see if he was close to publishing the new work he had told me about…how long ago? Wow, like a year. It’s been a busy year for sure, but I really need to slow down and smell the roses. His work email bounced, so I figured he’d been laid off, seems to be happening a lot…so I wrote his publisher and asked him to have Tim call me. I was surprised to receive an email back that he had died. This is happening far too much lately. Anyway, here’s an old GPod radio we did several years ago. I’ll miss ya man, we had some great conversations. Show : Part 1 | Part 2 (may 15 2005)

From Puske: I pay special attention to the podcast novel which they debuted – “The Failed Cities Monologues” http://www.podiobooks.com/title/the-failed-cities-monologues/) – link is to the podiobooks version.

He is however introduced in the actual roundtable piece and is a major contributor to the conversation. My omission was simply due to being overworked with too little time. Hopefully he will not hate me for this oversight. )
Also, the first installment of In Your Ear, some tidbits about the Y project and some ranting and raging in response to the mailbag.
In part three we will introduce another regular segment to the GSpot, A Concise Guide To Setting Yourself On Fire
DPRGRM, PILOTLITE, MYTHOS MEDIA & FOOLISHPEOPLE PRESENT
Y
In a post-apocalyptic world, Y is a documentary-style reality show where the grand prize is the future of our species on planet Earth.
Mythos Media and FoolishPeople will join with DPRGRM/Pilotlite to create ‘Y’, a feature film that starts shooting in Los Angeles July 2009.
LOS ANGELES, CA 02/27/09 – DPRGRM/Pilotlite announced a project today that forges a new path in independent cinema by bringing together real world experience and film in a unique way. ‘Y’ brings an audience inside the creation of a modern myth. The audience will become actual cast members, and be immersed in the story in real time. The film crew will also be part of the story as well as part of the cast, therefore creating a total immersive experience that bridges the traditional proscenium of audience/performer. My friend Michael Dean co-wrote a book with Alan Lastufka, titled:YouTube: An Insider’s Guide to Climbing the Charts. For some odd reason, they seemed to think my insane rambling has context and enough coherence to include as several pages in said book. Even though that is the case, I still recommend picking it up if you’re at all interested in indie/digital/on-line video/film. (Enough slashes?) Go now. Buy.
I encourage anyone reading this to follow me on Twitter. This is where I’m leaving the majority of my brain droppings these days. Twitter, Friendfeed (for the ultra-stalkerish type ) and The GSpot should give you more information than you want or need. If not, seek help. Now.
So, the rule is: if you follow me on Twitter I will look at your profile page, get a sense of who you are, what you write about, and what your intention is in following me and in being on Twitter in general. If you look interesting, funny, intelligent or otherwise intriguing, I will follow you back. If you look like a marketer, SEO or social media “consultant”, boring corporate dweeb, or just someone who wants to sell stuff and/or rack up followers (collect coins or something for gopod’s sake) then I will not follow you back. Period.
Also, if I know you or know of you and I think you’re a bag of pig swill, don’t expect a follow back. If I know you and I find you even slightly less reprehensible than a bag of writhing, maggot infested, pox infected, low rent, box of butterscotch candy (I HATE BUTTERSCOTCH!), then I will probably follow you.
Read into that what you will.
Eventually this will replace joseph.matheny.com More here as I get time to develop it.
